Starting out as an Investment Analyst in private wealth management I recognized early on that school had prepared me well for equity and fixed income analysis but was lacking in training for evaluating managers. I chose to sit for the CAIA exams to improve my skills in manager due diligence and to have a better understanding of liquid alternatives.

The CAIA exams turned out to be far more rewarding in that they introduced me to different aspects of portfolio construction. From understanding the role each asset class plays in a portfolio to recognizing how alternative asset classes could reduce risk in a portfolio, I began to think more like an allocator. I believe our clients are going to benefit long term from my training as we have introduced asset classes that will help us be better behavioral guides - keeping our clients in their seats during volatile climates for risk assets.
