Michael F. Beck, CAIA, CIPM, CFP, CPA

Headshot of Michael Beck

I started in the financial industry on the defined contribution plan side and learned a great deal around marketable securities and how the operate in the USA. After leaving the industry for a brief period of time to obtain my MBA, I worked in the banking channel in Honolulu, HI for the investments division. This was a client-facing role providing financial and insurance planning services to our end clients. However, after gaining this knowledge and working directly with clients, I wanted to learn more about the risk and performance measurement aspects of these investments. This transition to a middle office role was my first exposure to private market investments and how they differ from public market return and risk profiles.

This interest led me to the performance measurement space at multiple firms in both the USA and Europe. Having knowledge in both the front and middle office has allowed me to explain private investments in a more logical and simple manner in context of the risk and return profiles of them, compared to public investments. The knowledge I obtained by the CAIA curriculum has enabled me to enhance the performance measurement reporting and risk reporting at my current firm.

As an active volunteer with the CFA Institute for the Global Investment Performance Standards®, I feel that my knowledge of both public and private markets enables me to add value to the conversations around changes or questions to the standards. I have encouraged many of the colleagues with the CIPM® (Certificate in Investment Performance Management) to pursue additional designations to learn more about the markets and how they operate. This knowledge base has allowed me to focus in on the risk elements and data analysis to help provide meaningful analysis to our portfolio managers. This broad base of knowledge has enabled me to speak at multiple financial conferences on Performance Measurement and help enhance the performance measurement profession.
