Becoming a CAIA Charterholder gives me real credibility in the private and alternative investment world — it builds on the foundation of being a CFA Charterholder and adds depth in areas most investors don’t fully understand. It’s sharpened my lens for identifying opportunities across non-traditional assets. Another great benefit is that it connects me to a top-tier global network of professionals in the alternatives space.

For me, pursuing the CAIA was a natural next step in continuing my professional development. As I’ve rapidly advanced through the ranks at my firm, I’ve made it a priority to keep expanding my knowledge and perspective — especially in areas shaping the future of investing. The CAIA program offered exactly that: a deep dive into the world of alternative and private investments, where innovation, complexity, and opportunity intersect.

Working in mining investments across Sub-Saharan Africa has shown me that success comes down as much to geopolitics, communities, and local partnerships as it does to financial modeling. Living in South Africa and seeing how deeply the mining sector is woven into the economy and society has been eye-opening. As someone from Ecuador, I’d love to see my home country embrace mining with the same balance of strategic development and community engagement that can make projects here so impactful.

Mining in South Africa is unique because it blends a long, rich history with a present that’s full of challenges and shifting dynamics. The industry doesn’t just drive the economy—it plays a critical role in stabilizing the country and shaping its future. It is this interplay between legacy, current challenges, and impact which makes the South African mining sector truly distinctive.

I can’t choose just one role model. Personally, my family—my father Alexis, my mother Soledad, and my older siblings Damian and Yavanna—has always supported me, never wavering, and encouraged me to pursue my dreams and passions. My dad’s discipline, matched with my mother’s kindness, is the perfect blend that has shaped who I am today.

Professionally, two colleagues stand out: our COO, Clifford Hallatt, and our Head of Special Projects, Waheed Sulaiman. They have different leadership styles, yet both inspire me with their competence, integrity, and ability to stay composed under pressure or any curveballs that life can throw. They’ve set the bar for the kind of leader I hope to one day become.

For an investor just starting out, I would say be ambitious and always give your best. Seek to constantly expand your knowledge and understanding, even in areas outside your immediate field. Curiosity and a willingness to learn beyond your comfort zone will set the foundation for long-term success.

For an investor who is mid-way through their career, I would say to always stay grounded and focus on developing your leadership skills. Uphold strong ethics and maintain your moral compass at all times—these are what truly define a successful and respected investor over the long term.
