Sebastiaan Hartman, CAIA, CIPM, DSI Institutional Advisor (Dutch Security Institution)

Sebastiaan Hartman: April 2026 Member Spotlight

My interest in Alternative Investments began early in my career, driven by a desire to better understand how private markets shape institutional portfolios. I was particularly drawn to the increased complexity of private market investments, including longer investment horizons, and the need to assess risk and return across multiple dimensions. In 2016, I decided to pursue the CAIA Charter to deepen that understanding and to develop a more structured perspective that goes beyond traditional investment frameworks.

The CAIA program provided exactly what I was looking for: a rigorous analytical framework combined with a holistic approach to evaluating investment decisions across risk, return, liquidity, and impact within private markets. What stood out to me throughout the program was the strong emphasis on long‑term thinking, professional integrity, and thoughtful decision‑making principles that closely align with how I approach my role and wider professional development. Many of the concepts proved directly relevant to the challenges I encounter in practice, making the journey not only academically rewarding, but also highly applicable in day‑to‑day decision‑making.

In addition to the CAIA Charter, I hold a Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) from the CFA Institute and am registered with the Dutch Securities Institute (DSI) for advising institutional clients. These qualifications reflect my commitment to analytical rigor, integrity, and fiduciary responsibility. To further broaden my strategic perspective, I completed a program in Strategic Thinking at IMD in Lausanne, which enhanced my ability to translate high‑level strategy into detailed analytical insight and to contribute meaningfully to discussions on long‑term value creation within alternative investments.

Beyond the technical foundation, becoming a CAIA Member has reinforced the way I think about my work and my professional values. CAIA encourages a mindset of intellectual curiosity and a willingness to challenge assumptions, which continues to influence how I assess risk, reflect on outcomes, and engage in discussions with stakeholders. I particularly value being part of a global professional community that shares a commitment to ethics, continuous learning, and raising standards within the investment industry.

After obtaining the CAIA Charter, I became actively involved as a volunteer within the CAIA community. I participate in the CAIA Grading Jamboree program for the Level II exam, where I serve as a Grade Coordinator for the Europe region. In this role, I contribute to safeguarding the quality and integrity of the examination process while supporting the next generation of CAIA candidates.

Continuous learning plays a central role in how I approach my profession. The alternatives landscape continues to evolve—through new structures, data challenges, regulatory developments, and sustainability themes—which makes ongoing learning essential. I would strongly encourage professionals who are serious about building a long‑term career in alternative investments to become a CAIA Member and to actively engage with the CAIA ecosystem. In particular, the CAIA.nxt courses and microcredentials provide a valuable opportunity to deepen expertise in focused areas, refresh key concepts, and translate learning into better‑informed decision‑making in practice.

One area that strongly motivates me is the intersection of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Alternative Investments. I believe private markets are uniquely positioned to help long‑term investors achieve both financial returns and positive societal impact, whether through climate‑aligned infrastructure or impact‑driven private equity initiatives.

Looking ahead, my goal is to continue developing as a trusted professional in interpreting risk, return, and impact across alternative investments, while contributing to the construction of resilient, responsible, and purpose‑driven portfolios with a clear long‑term perspective.
