Hedge Fund Alpha: Cycle or Sunset?

Description: Evidence shows that, after fees and costs, hedge fund managers as a group have shown a marked decline in risk-adjusted alpha in the ten years following the global financial crisis (GFC). What’s more, 90% of excess returns variation show that hedge funds have meaningfully altered how they drive performance, partially explaining the observed change in results post-GFC.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of individual and high net worth investors allocating to collectibles. In addition to their aesthetic benefits, investors enjoy the tangible nature of sports collectibles, classic cars, vintage watches, art, and handbags as opposed to the paper assets of stocks and bonds. The collectibles space is becoming more sophisticated, adopting institutional structures such as auctions, price indices, free ports, IPOs, and fractional ownership. Scott is responsible for building partnerships with institutional investors across Manulife’s private markets platform which spans: agriculture, timberland, real estate, infrastructure, private equity, private credit. Scott previously served as a vice president on the institutional sales team at Nuveen marketing alternative and traditional strategies to US investors. Prior to joining Nuveen, he was a relationship development associate at GE Asset Management working with European and Middle Eastern institutional investors.
